Bored in quarantine? Never fear! The final block of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films have now been added to Netflix CZ on April 1st. Classics like Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and many more will join a host of other films already available to stream on the service.
Bored of the quarantine yet? I am too. Home office seems like a great idea in theory… but when you factor in children, a lot of work (or lack of work) and more, you need a bit of an escape. Here are ten films to (hopefully) get you through covid-19. BUT, before you get watching, can I make a suggestion?
Although far from perfect, the representation of women in film has improved in recent years. From Alex Garland’s female led sci-fi Annihilation to Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, there are a lot of relatively recent films to remind you that women in film are here, and they’re here to stay. You should probably listen to what they have to say! The following are all (currently) available to stream in the Czech Republic. Get to it.
The Invisible Man is one of the best films of the year, and most certainly one of the best Blumhouse films, maybe ever. Extremely unsettling and Hitchcockian in nature, Leigh Whannell’s adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic is not only a masterful exercise in slow-burn suspense, but a chilling commentary on domestic abuse.
Woody Harrelson will come to town for the Prague International Film Festival Febiofest this March, which will take place from March 19 – 27.
Horse Girl is a lively exploration of one girl’s madness and frustration. What starts off as a quirky indie comedy that we’ve seen a hundred times before soon turns into a wonderfully unique representation of mental health that’s both heartfelt and hypnotic. And Brie is fantastic.
Those who know me will know that aside from my ridiculous obsession with all things film, I’m also very into viruses… not in a funny way, obviously. I’m fascinated by them and have been itching to do a listicle ‘best of’ one day soon. But until then, here is why Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion is by far the best and most realistic virus movie to come out of Hollywood.
The trailer just dropped for Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and it looks predictably well, Wes Anderson, in every way imaginable, right down to the all-star cast.
Birds of Prey is a dynamite girl-powered superhero movie exploding with ultra-colour and a butt load of fun. Yan’s wonderfully stylised film isn’t afraid to get silly (and sweary) compared to the royal mess that was 2016’s Suicide Squad. Think of a slightly tamer Deadpool without all the insufferable meta BS.
Dutch composer, musician and lute player extraordinaire Jozef van Wissem (Only Lovers Left Alive) was recently in Prague and Brno to play a couple of concerts as a part of the accompanying programme of Czech Republic’s Future Gate sci-fi film festival.
