Hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians will not be screened in Czech cinemas because leading distributors feel it is not suitable for the Czech audience, and were unable to clarify why.
The news comes as a surprise considering the film’s international success and the fact that the Czech Vietnamese community is the third largest minority in the country with numbers over 83 000 according to the 2011 census.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians has been one of the year’s most ground-breaking Hollywood titles as it is the first major studio film in over 20 years to feature a cast entirely comprised of Asian and Asian-American actors, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Nico Santos, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh.
Based on the best-selling book by Kevin Kwan, the romantic comedy sees American professor and New Yorker Rachel Chu travel to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family, who end up being one of the richest families in the country.
