If you haven’t heard already, every year Bio Oko presents the Holešovice Film Advent – a decent list of recent and classic films, both Czech and international, to rescue you from your annual winter sh*tstorm of depression and cold. The festival is on from Dec 1 – Dec 27, and tickets start from 40Kc which is basically the price of a beer! Check out some of the programme recommendations below.

The films of Tim Burton

There will be a few of Tim Burton’s better films playing over the course of the month including the classics Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, as well as the Christmas/Halloween stop-animation treat The Nightmare Before Christmas, the colourful remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the recent Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

National Theatre Live

There are also some recorded performances of recent plays in London’s National Theatre, including Nick Dear and Danny Boyle’s (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch, plus a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet also starring Cumberbatch.

Other highlights

If you missed any of this years most talked about films, catch some of them here including the new Studio Ghibli French animation The Red Turtle, Woody Allen’s Cafe Society, Prague based war thriller Anthropoid, indie hit Captain Fantastic, Hollywood classic Casablanca, and also Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed Spirited Away which is sure to be a festival highlight so get those tickets early!

There will also be some Czech films including Brother Karel – a documentary about the famous Czech storyteller, and A House on Wheels – a documentary and presentation about nomad Petr Sestak and his two-year-journey around Europe in an old van full of photographs. These films are in Czech only.

On top of that there will be some Christmas events including a celebration of St. Nicholas Day in the cinema, so be sure to bring your kids along so you can scare the sh*t out of them.
