The Shape of Water trailer – Guillermo Del Toro’s new Cold War fantasy

By Ryan Keating-Lambert

Acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro is back with The Shape of Water, a creature feature and drama set in the backdrop of the Cold War. Check out the trailer below.

The Shape of Water sees mute cleaning lady Elisa (Sally Hawkins) and her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) stumble across an unusual aquatic creature (Del Toro regular Doug Jones) in a high security government laboratory. Elisa soon forms an unusual bond with the one-of-a-kind creature, much to the dismay of her bosses including Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg.

This will be Del Toro’s first film since 2015’s Crimson Peak, and from the looks of the trailer, has the director’s signature visual charm and resembles his earlier work like Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone and the award winning Pan’s Labyrinth. Funnily enough, Doug Jones’ creature reminds me a little of Hellboy’s Abe Sapien… especially the whole rotten egg thing.

The Shape of Water is set to hit select cinemas from December 2017. Check out the gorgeous film poster by artist James Jean below.
